A hundred and twenty years ago, trains to Vienna stopped here. Today it is bikes that stop. Drop in for hot sour cabbage soup, cold lemonade and a view of the Tatras that is truly worth getting off the saddle for.

A quick bite or a proper lunch

There is no single time of day people drop in. Breakfast before setting off, something straight from the pan at noon, pizza for the whole crew in the afternoon. The kitchen works for cyclists and for families, not for each of them separately.

Pizza in three sizes, 200 g beef burgers, kebab, toasted baguette, fries. Veggie versions too.

Lunch done right

Sour cabbage soup with pork rib, highland potato pancake, pierogi, trout. Monday to Friday, dish of the day for 30 zł.

We put the biggest emphasis on soft drinks, because most guests get back on the bike a moment later. Cold, hot, to cool down and to warm up.

Why “Stacja”

Trains to Vienna
ran this way

In 1904, still under the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, a standard gauge line was opened from Nowy Targ through Czarny Dunajec to Trstená in Slovakia, and from there on towards Vienna and Budapest. For years, passenger and goods trains ran here, carrying timber, peat and cattle.

The last trains ran here in 1989 and the tracks were removed in 1991. The old trackbed was paved and today it is one of the busiest sections of the Route around the Tatras. Railway bridges and mileposts still stand along the way.

The station building survived too, and you are sitting in it. Restored, it stands in the same place as a hundred and twenty years ago and is a stop once more. Only the means of transport has changed.

Hence the name: Stacja, Polish for station. For eighty-five years trains stopped here, today it is bikes. The place still does the same job, just for different travellers.

What people ask

Where can I eat on the Route around the Tatras between Nowy Targ and Trstená?

At Stacja Czarny Dunajec, at kilometre 11 from Nowy Targ and 9 km before the border. The restaurant stands directly on the path, in a former railway station building, and is open daily from 9:00 to 21:00. A terrace overlooking the trail and bike racks by the tables.

Can I come by car and leave it here?

Yes. There is parking at the restaurant and a second one, a park and ride, by the school complex on Jana Pawła II street 144. It is about 20 minutes from Nowy Targ and Zakopane. Many guests leave the car here and ride towards the border or Nowy Targ.

What are the opening hours?

Daily from 9:00 to 21:00, all year round. In winter, when the path serves cross-country skiers, the kitchen works exactly as in summer.

Is Stacja good for children?

Yes. Next to the restaurant there is a playground and a bouncy castle, and the menu has a kids' section with chicken broth, nuggets and a small pizza. The dining room has tables where the whole family sits comfortably, and from the terrace you can see the bikes and the trail.

Can I leave my bike during lunch and fix something on it?

The racks are by the terrace, in sight from your table. We have spanners and a pump on site for small repairs. We are not a workshop, but you can pump up a tyre and tighten a saddle without looking for a bike shop.

Is the building a real railway station?

Yes. Stacja Czarny Dunajec was built in 1904 on the line from Nowy Targ to Trstená, which carried trains towards Vienna and Budapest. The last trains ran here in 1989, and today a cycle path follows the embankment of the line. The full story is on a separate page.
